#Tenure 💪 Its a question that was raised today...You may not like my answer.
It's such an interesting and conflicting conversation that I've had with many Directors & Construction Managers that are hiring, but certainly with candidates looking for a new role.
💡My feeling is that the goldilocks sweet spot is 3 to 6 years with a company...Why?
⏳1 to 2 years - It might look like you haven't committed to the business long enough - certainly in construction. That may not be even the #lifecyce of one project (excluding fitout projects). This can be especially true if your last 3 employments have been 2-2-2 years. Not the worst, but not the best. Tough when its a slower job market too.
⏳2 to 4 years - This is an ok time to move I reckon, but you may have some questions to answer, as to why you're moving. Why not hold on a little longer for that #promotion? If I see 3-3-3 years, I'm not alarmed, I think that's ok.
⏳4 to 6 years - If you're in this bracket, then you've likely been through plenty of projects, been with the business' ups & downs, but ultimately been #committed. If I see a 4-4-4 or a 5-5-5 years, it's a big thumbs up 👍
⏳6 to 8 and even up to 10 years - Well you've either been promoted through the ranks and are at the top of your game looking for a new challenge, or you've been held back and kept in the same role for a long time, but now its difficult to make a move. The query around "why hasn't this person progressed in ther career" comes up. Not to mention that 7 years' Long Service Leave you might be walking away from at year 6....
⏳10+ years - Well that's rare to see nowadays in construction. However, when I do see it, rather than employers seeing it as a positive, they often become pessimistic.
❓"Why are they leaving after so long? Are they institutionalised? Will they adapt well when they've had it one way for so long?"❓
🗣️Which is why I say, 3 to 6 years with one company is what seems to be the sweet spot.
Allow me to say; This doesn't write off anyone that isn't in this category. Everything is circumstantial and individual. It's just what I see from SOME construction companies when they're hiring, and what they tell me they want.
My advice if you're not in the goldilocks category - Prepare your answer as to WHY you're moving. If there's a good reason, there'll be a good answer.
It was a question that was raised and I thought I'd share my answer.
